A steel yacht is only as good as the paper trail behind its plate. Owners who visit our steel yacht building program are often surprised that the first month of a build involves almost no visible boat at all — it is certificates, cutting files and surface preparation. This article walks through that invisible phase honestly, because it is where good steel builds are separated from expensive mistakes.

Where the Plate Comes From

Indonesia has a mature commercial shipbuilding supply chain, and yacht-grade steel rides on it. Structural plate for classed builds is ordered against the classification society’s material rules — typically Grade A or AH36 shipbuilding steel — and every plate arrives with a mill certificate stating its heat number, chemistry and mechanical test results. The certificate is not a formality. The surveyor cross-checks heat numbers stamped on the physical plate against the paperwork and against the approved drawings before any cutting begins. Plate that cannot be traced does not enter a classed hull, full stop.

Sourcing decisions also cover condition. Plate that has sat uncovered in a tropical port develops mill scale and surface rust that must be blasted off before fabrication, so we specify shot-blasted and shop-primed plate wherever schedule allows. Shop primer buys months of protection during the build and gives welders a clean, consistent surface.

Nesting and CNC Cutting

Modern steel fabrication is a software exercise before it is a workshop exercise. The naval architect’s structural drawings are converted into cutting files, and nesting software arranges every frame, floor, bracket and shell plate onto standard plate sheets to minimise scrap. On a 30-metre hull this is thousands of parts, each labelled with its position in the vessel.

Our CNC plasma tables cut these parts with edge accuracy that hand cutting cannot match, which matters twice: tight fit-up reduces weld volume, and reduced weld volume means less heat distortion to correct later. Forming, Fit-Up and the First Weld

Flat parts become a ship through forming and fit-up. Frames are bent to the lines plan on rollers and presses, checked against full-size templates, then erected on the building berth starting from the keel. Shell plate is rolled to its designed curvature and offered up to the framing, where fit-up tolerances are measured in millimetres.

The first structural weld is a milestone with a queue of prerequisites behind it. Weld procedure specifications must be approved, welders must hold current qualifications for the joint type and position, and consumables must be stored dry to specification. Once welding begins, every structural seam is logged on the hull weld map — who welded it, with what procedure, and what inspection it received. Visual inspection covers everything; ultrasonic testing covers the percentage of butt welds the class rules demand, with any defective section ground out and rewelded until it passes.

Why Sequence Discipline Matters

Steel moves when heated, and a hull is heated thousands of times during fabrication. Yards control distortion with weld sequencing — balancing heat input from side to side and working outward from fixed reference structure — and by measuring the growing hull against its reference lines at every stage. This stage of the build is also where budgets are made or broken.
