Sustainability & Community Impact
The art of building Phinisi yachts is intrinsically linked to the natural world—the forests that provide the timber and the seas the vessels will sail. At Indonesia Yacht Builder, we believe we have a profound responsibility to be stewards of these resources and to empower the communities that are the keepers of this ancient craft. Our commitment to sustainability is not a policy; it is a core principle that guides every decision we make. As a member of the Juara Holding Group, we are dedicated to a model of business that is regenerative, not extractive.
Environmental Commitments
1. Responsible Timber Sourcing
Our yachts are born from the forest, and we are committed to ensuring those forests thrive for generations to come. We maintain a strict sourcing policy:
- 100% SVLK Certification: All our primary hardwoods, including Teak and Ulin (Ironwood), are sourced through channels certified by Indonesia’s Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu (SVLK). This government-mandated system ensures the timber is legally harvested and traceable to its origin, combating illegal logging.
- Promoting Reforestation: For every yacht commissioned, we pledge to fund the planting of 1,000 native trees in partnership with recognized Indonesian reforestation NGOs.
2. Eco-Conscious Marine Operations
We build our yachts to be gentle on the pristine marine ecosystems they explore.
- Advanced Waste Management: Every vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art black and grey water treatment systems that meet or exceed MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) standards.
- Zero Single-Use Plastic: From the construction phase to final operation, we enforce a strict no single-use plastic policy. Our yachts are equipped with advanced water filtration systems and reusable containers.
- Carbon Offsetting: We calculate the carbon footprint of each vessel’s engine use during sea trials and delivery and offset 150% of these emissions through a partnership with the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Kalimantan, a leading REDD+ initiative.
Community & Cultural Commitments
1. Empowering the Konjo Community
Our shipyard in Bira, Bulukumba, is more than a factory; it is part of a community. Our goal is to create shared value and ensure the economic benefits of our work flow directly to the local people.
- Local Employment: Over 85% of our shipyard workforce, including our master shipwrights and craftsmen, are from the local Konjo community. We are committed to fair wages and safe working conditions, as detailed on our Safety & Compliance page.
- Apprenticeship Program: In partnership with community elders, we have established a paid apprenticeship program to train the next generation of tukang (builders), ensuring the invaluable, non-written knowledge of Phinisi construction is passed down.
2. Preserving a UNESCO Living Heritage
Our entire business model is an act of cultural preservation. By creating a viable, high-value market for authentic Phinisi yachts, we provide the economic incentive needed to keep this UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage alive and thriving. We actively document the building process and share this knowledge, in line with our Editorial Standards, to educate a global audience on the importance of this craft.
3. Supporting Marine Conservation
We dedicate 1% of our net profit annually to support the work of our conservation partners, such as the Coral Triangle Center and WWF Indonesia. This funding directly supports marine protected area management, scientific research, and community-based conservation initiatives in the regions our clients love to explore, including Raja Ampat and Komodo National Park.
