This article explains how a kit-design build actually works in an Indonesian yard, and where the real work lies once the files arrive.
What Counts as a Buildable Plan Set
Not every drawing set is a build package. To fabricate under class survey we need, at minimum: a lines plan and offsets, structural drawings with scantlings, a material specification, and weight and stability documentation. The gold standard is a package that adds nested CNC cutting files — every frame, floor, stringer and shell plate already arranged on standard plate sheets with part numbers matching an assembly sequence.
Stock designs from established naval architects usually meet this standard, which is why they dominate kit building. A proven design has been built before; its quirks are known, its stability book exists, and classification societies have seen its type. The Design Audit Before Cutting
We audit every incoming package before a single plate is cut, and owners should be suspicious of any yard that skips this. The audit checks three things. First, completeness — missing details around chainplates, engine beds and tank boundaries are the classic gaps that stall a build mid-fabrication. Second, class compatibility — if you want a Bureau Veritas or RINA certificate, the scantlings must satisfy their rules, and older stock designs occasionally need local reinforcement to comply. Third, buildability in our workflow — file formats, plate sizes available in Indonesia, and weld access in tight assemblies.

From Files to Frames
Once materials arrive with their mill certificates, cutting is quick — a complete 12–15 metre hull kit comes off the plasma tables in days. The parts are labelled, palletised in assembly order, and move to the berth, where the kit logic pays off: frames slot into pre-cut notches, plate edges meet with millimetre accuracy, and weld volume drops because gaps are small. What the Owner Keeps Control Of
A kit build divides responsibility cleanly. The designer owns the naval architecture; the yard owns fabrication quality; the owner owns the specification decisions — engine make, tankage, deck gear, interior fit-out. That division suits owners who have researched their boat for years and know exactly what they want. It also suits budgets: because the design cost is a known, modest figure for a stock plan set, more of the total spend lands on steel, systems and finish quality.
