The masthead or fractional sloop remains the most sensible rig for a steel cruising yacht in the 15–30 metre class: one mast, one set of standing rigging, the widest hardware ecosystem in yachting and the easiest short-handed sail plan to automate. On a steel new build the rig conversation is really a structures conversation — chainplates tied into frames, mast step landed on floors over the keel, and rigging loads run through the hull girder under Bureau Veritas or RINA review. Rig choice attracts more romance than almost any other specification decision, and deserves less. For most owners building a steel cruiser, the sloop wins on cold arithmetic: fewer spars to buy and maintain, fewer terminals to inspect, better upwind performance per square metre, and a global supply of furlers, winches and sails engineered around it. This article walks through the choices inside the sloop decision — and where the sloop honestly stops making sense.

Why the Sloop Wins on Steel Cruisers

Steel hulls carry displacement, and displacement demands sail area. A single large rig generates that area more efficiently than two small ones: the sloop’s uninterrupted foretriangle and big mainsail deliver better lift-to-drag than split rigs of equal total area, which matters when a 60-tonne cruiser needs to claw off a lee shore. Modern furling — in-boom or electric headsail systems — has dissolved the traditional argument that big single sails are unmanageable short-handed; a couple can genuinely sail a 24-metre sloop today.

The maintenance ledger points the same way. Every additional mast is a second set of standing rigging on a replacement cycle, a second mast step, second wiring loom, second lightning path. Where the Rig Meets the Steel

A rig is only as good as the structure beneath it, and this is where steel construction quietly excels. Chainplates on our builds are not bolted fittings hoping for backing plates — they are welded structure, tied through doublers into frames and longitudinals, sized against righting-moment loads with the margins class review demands. Keel-stepped versus deck-stepped is settled by size and honesty about use. Keel-stepped masts ride better in a seaway and survive rigging failures more gracefully; deck-stepped masts keep the interior dry and simplify tropical refits. Above 20 metres we default to keel-stepped with a properly engineered partners arrangement and a deck collar that actually seals.

Cutter Stays, Furling and the Automation Budget

Most of our sloops leave the yard as cutters in practice: a removable inner stay carrying a staysail or storm jib turns the rig into a flexible passage-making machine without surrendering the sloop’s simplicity in light air. Hydraulic backstay tensioners, electric primaries and in-boom furling then decide how few hands the boat needs — equipment chosen during design, because hydraulic runs and winch foundations are far easier drawn than retrofitted.

Are welded chainplates better than bolted ones?

On a steel hull, decisively. Welded chainplates integrated into frames eliminate the bolted interface where leaks and crevice corrosion start on composite boats, and they distribute rigging loads into the hull girder the way the structural model assumes. They are drawn, welded and surveyed as primary structure.

Should the mast be aluminium or carbon?

Aluminium remains the honest default for steel cruisers: robust, repairable worldwide and proportionate to the displacement it drives. Carbon saves aloft weight that a ballasted steel hull can genuinely use, but its cost and repair logistics only earn their place on performance-oriented briefs.

Can the rig be designed for short-handed sailing?

Yes — that is now the default request. In-boom or headsail furling, electric primaries, a removable inner stay and cockpit-led controls let a couple manage yachts that once needed six crew. The automation is specified during design so hydraulics and wiring are built in, not bolted on.
