In a modern-material yacht build — steel, aluminium or FRP — the hull itself is rarely more than 20–30% of the final invoice. The real cost drivers are labour hours in outfitting, machinery and systems, interior fit-out level, class and certification overhead, and the change orders owners sign after design freeze. The Hull Is the Affordable Part

Plate, profiles and welding consumables for a 30-metre steel hull are a surprisingly contained sum, and CNC cutting has compressed the labour inside fabrication itself. Aluminium raises material cost per tonne and demands certified welders at higher rates; FRP replaces plate with tooling and laminate. Machinery, Systems and the Equipment Ledger

Main engines, generators, hydraulics, air-conditioning, watermakers, electronics and deck machinery form the second-largest block, typically 25–35% of a motor yacht’s total. First, this block prices in global currency — a German gearbox costs what it costs in any country — so the saving on an Indonesian build concentrates in installation hours, not hardware. Second, equipment choices cascade: a bow thruster demands hydraulic or electrical capacity, which sizes generators, which sizes tankage and cooling. The cascade is designed once, on paper — or paid for repeatedly, in steel.

Interior Level: The Widest Variable in Yachting

Nothing moves a build price like the interior specification. A workboat-finish expedition interior and a lacquered five-cabin owner’s yacht can share a hull and differ by seven figures. The drivers are labour hours per square metre — veneer work, stone, hidden joinery tolerances — and the marine-grade materials themselves. Indonesia’s furniture-craft tradition gives our builds an unusual advantage here: joinery quality that commands premium rates elsewhere, at local hours. But no tradition abolishes arithmetic; an owner who doubles interior ambition after design freeze should expect the invoice to notice.

Certification overhead — class fees, survey attendance, flag paperwork — runs a modest single-digit percentage and is the least negotiable line on the sheet. Change Orders and the Discipline That Contains Them

Ask yards what breaks budgets and the answer is unanimous: changes after freeze.
