Owners often imagine classification as a final exam — a surveyor walking a finished yacht with a clipboard. It is closer to a co-pilot: class rides along the entire build, and its hold points are the moments when construction legally pauses for verification. Understanding them tells you exactly how much confidence a class certificate carries, and why a hull “built to class rules” without survey is worth far less than it sounds.
What a Hold Point Actually Is
A hold point is a stage boundary with a signature on it. The yard notifies the society, the surveyor attends, inspects the specific scope — and until the item is signed, production beyond it stops. This differs from a witness point, where the surveyor is invited but work may proceed, and from document review, which happens at a desk. The hold-point schedule is negotiated when the build contract and class notation are fixed, and a serious yard plans its production sequence around surveyor availability from day one.
The economic logic is blunt: verification costs little while structure is open and becomes brutal after it closes. An unwitnessed weld buried under tank-top plating can only be certified by cutting access — which is why experienced yards treat hold points as schedule anchors rather than interruptions.
The Hold Points, in Build Order
Material audit. Before cutting, the surveyor verifies mill certificates against plate stamps and approved drawings — the traceability chain described in our steel fabrication guide. Uncertified plate stops here, permanently.
Keel laying and framing. The erected backbone and frames are checked for alignment and scantling compliance against the approved structural drawings. This is also the formal keel-laying date that fixes which edition of the rules governs the vessel.
Hull plating and welding. The longest engagement: fit-up checks, weld procedure and welder qualification audits, visual inspection of structural seams and ultrasonic testing at the coverage the rules demand. Defective sections are ground out, rewelded and retested until the weld map closes clean.
Blasting and coating. Surface preparation to the specified standard — Sa 2.5 for our program, as detailed in the corrosion protection guide — is signed before primer hides the steel forever.
Tanks and tightness. Every integral tank and watertight boundary is pressure- or hose-tested with the surveyor present, including ballast and keel boxes.
Machinery and systems. Engine seatings, shafting alignment, fuel and bilge systems, fire protection and steering are inspected against the machinery rules as installation proceeds.
Inclining test and sea trials. The finished vessel’s stability is measured, the trials protocol is run, and the defect list is closed. Only then does the certificate issue.
Why This Matters Commercially
The certificate is a financial instrument as much as a technical one. Insurers price against it, banks lend against it, flag states recognise it, and the resale market pays for it — a surveyed hull with a complete technical file sells on documents, while an unclassed hull sells on faith. And visit around hold points when you can: they are the moments when the build’s true state is exposed and independently examined, far more informative than a polished walkthrough.
